Brief
The T-80 is a battle tank resulting from a development of the T-64 , on which for the first time in the USSR was adopted a turboshaft propulsion . The T-80 was developed in the late 1970s , and began to be deployed massively from 1978 .
Produced alongside the more rustic T-72 , it incorporated, like its predecessor, the latest developments in armor and armament from Soviet industry, and was assigned to elite units of the Soviet Army .
After the breakup of the USSR , its development was continued only in Ukraine — through a diesel version, the T-84 — on whose territory the original factory of the tank was located, in Kharkiv . Russia , preferring to equip itself with a modernized version of the T -72 , the T-90 , cheaper to produce and maintain, the design of which was carried out in the Urals . Nevertheless, at the end of the 2010s, Russia undertook a modernization of its T-80Bs to the T-80BVM 1 standard .
