Who is the MiG-29 fighter jet

Brief

he Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29 ( NATO code Fulcrum ) is a Soviet air supremacy fighter aircraft developed in the early 1970s, and whose first flight took place onOctober 6, 1977. It entered service with the Soviet Army in 1983, but is no longer ordered today by the Russian Air Force (it should theoretically be replaced from the end of 2018 by a modernized version, the MiG- 35 Fulcrum-E ). However, it is still used and ordered by many other countries. More than 1,100 examples have so far been built. It is the 5th most used combat aircraft in  the world in 2020 with an estimated 817 aircraft in operation, or 6% of the world's combat aircraft fleet 1 .

Operators

About 800 copies of the MiG-29 were produced until 1990 and 250 were mainly sold to member countries of the Warsaw Pact and other Soviet allied nations such as Cuba, India, Syria, Iraq or North Korea again. The export versions were slightly restricted with the loss of nuclear weapon carrying capacity or by a less efficient IFF system, the weapon system nevertheless remaining similar to the Soviet versions. Single-seater versions were advertised for $23 million in 1989.

Additional information

Design
In 1970, at the end of the Vietnam War , the US Air Force launched the F-15 and F-16 programs , while at the same time the Soviet aircraft MiG-21 , Sukhoi Su-15 and Sukhoi Su- 17 are at the end of their service. The USSR therefore decided to launch the Su-27 program to counter the F-15 and the F-14 . However, the price of this device being too high for it to be used in large numbers, the MiG-29 program was then launched to equip the Soviet Air Force (VVS)with a next-generation, but more rustic , light air superiority fighter designed by Ivan Mikoyan  2 , 3 . The first prototype, designated 9.01, made its maiden flight onOctober 6, 1977. It is followed by about twenty pre-series devices before its assembly begins. The first devices left the assembly lines in 1982.

Notable accidents
LeNovember 14, 2016the Russian naval aviation lost a MiG-29KUB of the 100th embarked  fighter aviation regiment after it crashed in the eastern Mediterranean 16 . The aircraft was returning from a reconnaissance mission over Syria and was to land on the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov . The pilot managed to eject, and was recovered safe and sound 17 . This could be filmed by an FLF present in the area.
