The Phoenix Ghost is a small " roam munition ", also called a suicide drone , designed by the American arms company Aevex Aerospace . According to a senior US defense official, it is similar to the AeroVironment Switchblade 1 .

Its main purpose is to send an explosive ammunition to a human-chosen target. It can fly over an area for up to six hours and can also perform surveillance 2 .

During a press conference John Kirby , spokesman for the Pentagon , indicated that the Phoenix Ghost was not a perfect twin of the Switchblade and that it had particular military capabilities which he refused to specify 4
History
The US Department of Defense stated that the Phoenix Ghost was developed before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 but that it "closely" matched the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces during the Battle of Donbass 5 .
