Course Map

Landscape astrophotography. In this course, you'll learn how to create technically impressive nightscapes with simple, step-by-step instructions. With Ian's helpful tips for beginner photographers and pros alike, you'll discover how to create an amazing collection of landscape astrophotos, take unique self-portraits under the Milky Way, and push your artistic perspective in exciting new directions.
Find a dark sky. Ian will define exactly what astrophotography is and how people have traditionally taken images of space. He will talk about an accessible form of astrophotography that uses basic photographic equipment. And it will teach you how to use a DSLR (digital single-lens reflex camera) to take stunning images of the night sky. It will encourage you to take pictures in a rural environment, where the skies are usually darker. And you'll get simple tips to help you track light pollution and find new places with dark skies.
Understand astronomy. You will learn where the earth is in our galaxy and how this knowledge will affect the photos you take of the night sky. Ian will point to basic online tools and open source planetarium software. They will help you better understand the Milky Way, including how we see it from earth on different dates and times.
Use the correct material. Ian will explain why a DSLR with a large image sensor will produce the best photos. He will talk about bright wide-angle lenses, which he thinks are the things that will help you the most in your landscape photography. And will indicate the characteristics of the objectives that will allow you to collect as much starlight as possible.
Facility. You'll learn the best time to install your hardware and how to determine the orientation of your camera. Ian will walk you through practical ways to preserve your night vision to get the best possible view of the stars. He will also talk about the factors you need to consider when preparing your shot and the best ways to ensure tripod stability.
Choose an exposure for the Milky Way. Ian will take you step-by-step through how to choose your first exposure, including how to:
Set correct ISO setting, aperture and shutter speed
Focus manually and set your timer, white balance and noise reduction during long exposures
Enable RAW recording mode to get the best possible picture.
You'll also learn how it avoids common difficulties, including spherical aberration, noise, and grain.
Compose photos. You'll discover why framing the sky with the landscape of the earth can give perspective to the galaxy and create more dynamic images. Ian will explain the rule of thirds and how to use it to your advantage when you want to showcase your skyscape.
Paint with light. Ian will explain different light painting techniques and how to use them to add punch to your landscape astrophotography. You'll learn how to use a simple flashlight to illuminate your foreground or add detail when you need it most.
Process your nocturnal landscapes. You'll watch Ian use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to show how he deals with his astrophotography. He'll explain how he tweaks his white balance, improves brightness and saturation to create a beautifully polished final photo.
